I think it's about time for America to catch on to what's going on with T.V shows. Every show on television is the same. and we are due for a change, a fresh idea that will spark our attention and change how we watch T.V. forever... or at least the next ten years or so.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am one of the most random people anyone will every meet. Thus said, over the Thanksgiving holiday, I got bored and started watching that one channel that shows all the old shows like Flipper and The Andy Griffith Show, and I started making connections between the shows that I watched.
I started with Lassie. Lassie had three basic characters: Lassie, World's smartest dog, Timmy, World's dumbest boy-child, and June Lockhart, Timmy's mom and the only woman in the world who could speak fluent collie.
Every episode had the same plot. Timmy would find himself fifty miles away from home, duct taped to Geoffrey Dauhmer's lunchbox. Lassie would sit and watch the whole thing happen and then run as fast as he could to Timmy's house where he would open the front door, that swung outward, and into Timmy's kitchen where June was always cooking something. Lassie would start barking and June would be like "What's that Lassie? Timmy duct taped himself to Geoffrey Dauhmer's lunchbox? We'd better go save him." Then Lassie would start barking again and she'd say something like, "Oh, that's right Lassie. We'd better make sure we turn off the oven and the iron before we leave." Then they'd go save Timmy and everything would be good, and every show was the same!
Well, eventually America caught on to that and Lassie was cancelled, but not before they gave viewers a whole new show, Flipper.
Flipper was a swimming Lassie. The same exact plot was in every show. Someone would be in trouble and Flipper would save the day. Eventually, America caught on to that, and Flipper was cancelled as the introduced yet another new show, but this one had an interesting twist.
The show was called Gentle Ben, the story of a young boy named Mark... and his pet... grizzly bear.
No, people! We do not need to be teaching children that grizzly bears are friendly! The show should have been called "Highly Medicated Ben". *frustrated sigh*
Anyway...
Television then is not too different from television now. The same types of shows are being played over and over and over, but apparently, America hasn't caught on yet.
For example, CSI.
CSI started out as a great show but it was just Law and Order with a slight twist. The transition from Law and Order to CSI was much like the transition from Lassie to Flipper. However, with both of the mentioned shows playing now, television producers did something that no one has done before. They took the show and split it up into subcategories. Now, all of the sudden, it's not just Law and Order, It's Law and Order:SVU and Law and Order: Criminal Intent. CSI did the same thing. There is no longer just CSI, now it's CSI: New York, CSI: Miami, I think they had CSI:Hawaii for a little while, but that one crashed and burned.
Although CSI, was just a cheesy rip-off, it introduced something new to television: Forensic Science. Before CSI, the only channel you could find a forensic science show on was Court TV. So, armed with a new idea to television, the producers from all different channels created tons of forensic science shows like BONES on FOX (which is fantastic, by the way) and Criminal Minds on whatever station it's on.
It's not just crime/foresic shows that have done this. It's also hospital/doctor shows, all of which spouted from ER, like House, Nip/Tuck, and this new one called 3 lbs. which, I don't think has even started yet.
The only show I've seen in a while that is truly unique, as far as I know, is Heroes on NBC. That show is amazing.
In short, television needs fresh and new ideas because they are few and far between, and then when they do show up, they are ruined by spin-off after spin-off with the occasional rip-off.
Stop making repeats! Life and entertainment are about new and creative ideas! Stop cramming the same shows down our throats! Fight the plague! |
